What is Kybella?

Kybella is a non-human and non-animal formulation of deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule found in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat.

How does it work?

When Kybella is injected into the fat beneath the chin, the molecule breaks down the fat cells that are responsible for making and storing fat. Once these cells are destroyed they are no longer capable of storing fat in the future. Therefore, once the aesthetic goal and contour are achieved it is not expected that retreatment with Kybella will be needed.

Are there side effects of the injection?

The most common side effects seen in the clinical trials of Kybella included injection site redness, swelling, numbness and bruising. Major side effects (nerve damage 4% and dysphagia 2%) were quite rare and are easily avoided by not injecting near the marginal mandibular nerve or saliva glands.

How long does each treatment take?

Treatment with Kybella is customized to each individual patient and will depend on the amount of fat present below the chin.  On average the dose in each session was 4-6 mL administered in 0.2mL doses spread out evenly over the fat pad beneath the chin.  Each office treatment typically takes 15-20 minutes. In clinical trials most patients experienced visible results in 2-4 treatment sessions spaced 1 month apart. Up to 6 treatments may be administered.
